The Bénin Republic has joined the global community in marking the beginning of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also known as Octobre Rose. This annual campaign aims to raise awareness about breast cancer, promote early detection, and encourage women to take proactive steps in protecting their health. According to Pr Freddy H. R. GNANGNON, a renowned oncologist and President of the Société béninoise de cancérologie (SOBÉCAN), breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in Bénin and Africa, with a high mortality rate.

Pr GNANGNON emphasized that breast cancer is a significant public health concern in Africa, with a woman dying from the disease every six minutes. If urgent measures are not taken, the burden of this disease is expected to almost double by 2040. He stressed that prevention, awareness, and early detection are crucial in reducing the impact of breast cancer on women's lives. By adopting a healthy lifestyle and being aware of any changes in their breasts, women can better protect their health and seek medical attention promptly if they notice any abnormalities.

The Professor of Surgical Oncology at the Faculté des Sciences de la Santé (FSS) of the Université d'Abomey-Calavi (UAC) highlighted the importance of early detection in treating breast cancer. When detected at an early stage, breast cancer can be treated more effectively, with less invasive and costly care, and better chances of recovery. Pr GNANGNON encouraged women to be vigilant and report any unusual changes in their breasts, such as lumps, deformation, nipple retraction, or abnormal discharge, to a healthcare professional.

As part of the Octobre Rose campaign, Pr GNANGNON and the SOBÉCAN are calling on the public to mobilize and promote awareness about breast cancer. The campaign aims to inform women about the risks of breast cancer, promote early detection, and encourage them to take charge of their health. By working together, the organizers hope to save more lives and reduce the burden of breast cancer on women's health in Bénin.

Breast cancer is a significant health challenge in Bénin, and the country is taking steps to address the issue. The Ministry of Health and the SOBÉCAN are working together to promote breast cancer awareness, provide education on early detection, and improve access to healthcare services for women. The Octobre Rose campaign is an opportunity for the government, healthcare professionals, and the public to come together and take action against breast cancer.

The theme of this year's Octobre Rose campaign is " Mobilisons-nous pour informer, promouvoir la détection précoce et sauver davantage de vies" (Let's mobilize to inform, promote early detection, and save more lives). The campaign will feature a series of activities, including awareness-raising events, education sessions, and screening programs. Women are encouraged to participate and take advantage of these services to protect their health.

As the Octobre Rose campaign gets underway, Pr GNANGNON and the SOBÉCAN are urging women in Bénin to take proactive steps in protecting their health. By being aware of the risks of breast cancer, adopting a healthy lifestyle, and seeking medical attention promptly if they notice any abnormalities, women can reduce their risk of developing breast cancer and improve their chances of recovery if diagnosed.
