US tech giant Nvidia has announced plans to invest over $1.6 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) projects in Egypt and Morocco. The investments will focus on developing advanced infrastructure for AI, including data centers and computing facilities. This move is part of Nvidia's efforts to expand its presence in Africa and support the growth of AI technologies on the continent.
In Morocco, Nvidia has partnered with Nexus Core Systems to establish a specialized AI facility outside Casablanca. The project, announced during the GITEX Africa conference in Marrakech, will have an initial investment of $1.2 billion and a planned computing capacity of 500 megawatts. The facility will utilize Nvidia's Blackwell technology and renewable energy from Morocco's energy company.
In Egypt, Cassava Technologies has collaborated with Vodafone Egypt to launch an AI initiative. The project aims to provide companies and government entities with GPU-based computing capabilities through a "GPU as a service" model. This will enable local training and operation of AI models while keeping data within Egypt's borders.
Another Egyptian project, led by Hassan Allam Data Centers, involves establishing a new data center in partnership with investment firm A15. The project is expected to have an investment of around $400 million. These initiatives align with the growing demand for computing power to develop and operate AI applications.
The investments come as Africa continues to face a significant gap in digital infrastructure and advanced computing. Currently, the continent accounts for less than 1% of the world's data center capacity, despite making up around 18% of the global population. Nvidia's investments aim to address this gap and support the development of local AI capabilities.
The projects also reflect a broader trend of companies and governments seeking to develop local infrastructure and reduce reliance on data centers outside their borders. By investing in AI infrastructure, Egypt and Morocco aim to enhance their digital capabilities and support economic growth.
Nvidia's expansion into Egypt and Morocco is expected to have a positive impact on the region's technology sector. The investments will create new opportunities for innovation, job creation, and economic development. As the demand for AI technologies continues to grow, Nvidia's presence in Africa is likely to play a significant role in shaping the continent's digital future.
