A nursing mother in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, has been arrested by the police for allegedly attempting to sell her baby for ₦1.5 million. According to reports, the arrest was made possible through a sting operation orchestrated by journalist Chidiebube Okeoma, who was alerted to the plot by an individual. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, met with an undercover "buyer" arranged by Okeoma, leading to her arrest.

The journalist, Chidiebube Okeoma, revealed that the individual who alerted him to the plot claimed the woman openly expressed her intention to sell the baby. To avoid alerting the suspect, Okeoma advised the person to pretend to be interested in buying the child, and a meeting was arranged at Rock View, near the Imo State Police Headquarters in Owerri. The suspect was subsequently handed over to the police.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly blamed another woman for encouraging her to sell the baby. However, the second woman denied having anything to do with the alleged plan. The nursing mother also claimed that she considered selling the child because she did not know the baby's father and lacked the financial means to care for the baby.

The case has raised concerns about child trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable children in Nigeria. It comes shortly after an Enugu woman was jailed for three years for stealing a baby, highlighting growing concerns over child-related crimes and baby trafficking in the country. Under Nigerian law, the buying, selling, or trafficking of children is a serious criminal offense.

The suspect and the woman she accused are currently in police custody while investigations continue. Depending on the outcome of the investigations, anyone found culpable could face prosecution under child trafficking and other relevant criminal laws. The police have not disclosed further details about the case, but it is understood that they are working to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt to sell the baby.

Child trafficking is a significant problem in Nigeria, with many cases reported in recent years.
