The National Road Safety Observatory in Tunisia has reported that the number of road accident fatalities has increased by 11.11% since the start of the year, compared to the same period last year. As of September 18, 2026, a total of 980 people have been killed and 4,391 injured in 3,384 road accidents. In contrast, during the same period in 2025, there were 882 fatalities and 5,299 injuries in 3,986 road accidents.
According to the observatory, the main causes of road accidents in Tunisia are lack of attention and distraction, which accounted for 1,021 accidents (30.17%), followed by speeding, which was responsible for 740 accidents (21.87%). Other causes of accidents include failure to respect priority, which accounted for 263 accidents (7.77%), and reckless driving, which caused 258 accidents (7.62%).
The observatory also reported that speeding is the leading cause of fatal road accidents in Tunisia, responsible for 360 fatalities (36.73%) and 1,021 injuries (23.25%). Lack of attention and distraction was the second leading cause of fatal accidents, resulting in 177 fatalities and 1,128 injuries. Reckless driving was the third leading cause, causing 65 fatalities and 227 injuries.
The governorate of Tunis has recorded the highest number of road accidents, with 403 incidents resulting in 76 fatalities and 496 injuries. The governorate of Mahdia has also recorded a high number of accidents, with 284 incidents resulting in 47 fatalities and 349 injuries. On the other hand, the governorate of Kébili has recorded the lowest number of road accidents, with 43 incidents resulting in 13 fatalities and 65 injuries.
The National Road Safety Observatory has emphasized that the statistics and data related to road accidents in Tunisia are preliminary and subject to daily updates. The observatory has also noted that the geographical distribution of road accidents and their victims should be interpreted with caution, as it does not take into account demographic and socio-economic factors that may affect the accuracy of comparisons between regions.
The increase in road accident fatalities in Tunisia has raised concerns about road safety in the country. The authorities have been urged to take measures to reduce the number of road accidents and improve road safety. The National Road Safety Observatory has called for greater awareness and education on road safety, as well as stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent accidents.
