The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the commencement of academic activities by the Faculty of Law of the Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State, Nigeria. This approval also includes the introduction of 30 new academic programmes for the 2026/2027 academic session. The NUC's approval was conveyed in a letter dated September 11, 2026, signed by the Director, Academic Planning of the NUC, Abubakar M. Girei.
The newly approved programmes cover full-time undergraduate and postgraduate studies across various disciplines. Some of the approved programmes include B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Information Systems, and LL.B. Common and Islamic Law. Additionally, the NUC approved B.Sc. Education Physics, B.Sc. Education Biology, B.Sc. Education Mathematics, B.Ed. Educational Management, B.Ed. Early Childhood Education, and B.Ed. Adult Education.
The NUC's approval also covers B.Sc. Community Health, Medical Laboratory Science, B.Sc. Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Doctor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Radiography, Optometry, B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology, B.Sc. Environmental Standards, and B.Sc. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Furthermore, the commission approved B.Sc. Applied Geology and Remote Sensing, B.A. Education Arabic, B.A. Education English, and B.Sc. Science Laboratory Technology.
At the postgraduate level, the NUC approved PGD, M.Sc., and Ph.D. programmes in Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, Banking and Finance, and Information Technology. The commission also approved Master’s programmes in Banking and Finance as well as Accounting and Finance. These new programmes aim to respond to emerging educational needs and developments in technology, science education, and health-related disciplines.
The Vice-Chancellor of FUD, Professor Ahmad Mohammed Gumel, described the NUC's approval as a significant milestone in the university's efforts to expand its academic programmes. He stated that the new programmes were designed to equip students with relevant knowledge and skills to meet current industry requirements and address emerging societal challenges.
According to Professor Gumel, the strategic expansion of the university's academic programmes will enhance the capacity of FUD graduates to compete effectively in the workforce and make meaningful contributions to their respective professions and society. The Vice-Chancellor expressed optimism that the new programmes will help FUD achieve its goal of producing well-rounded graduates who can contribute to national development.
The introduction of the 30 new programmes brings the total number of academic programmes offered by FUD to over 50. The university's expansion of its academic offerings is expected to attract more students and enhance its reputation as a leading institution of higher learning in Nigeria. The NUC's approval is a testament to FUD's commitment to providing quality education and meeting the needs of the labour market.
