The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 30 new academic programmes for the Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State, Nigeria. The programmes include cutting-edge disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence, Law, Data Science, Medical Laboratory Science, and Community Health. This development was announced by the university's Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahaya, in a statement released on Tuesday in Dutse.
According to Yahaya, the NUC's formal approval was conveyed in a letter dated September 11, 2026, under reference number NUC/AP/F33/VOL.II/15. The letter, signed by Abubakar M. Girei, the NUC Director of Academic Planning, was addressed to FUD Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ahmad Gumel. The approved programmes will commence full academic activities from the 2026/2027 academic session.
The newly approved undergraduate courses feature a strong focus on modern technology and legal studies. Some of the programmes include B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Data Science, B.Sc. Information Systems, and L.L.B. Common and Islamic Law. The university will also offer new education courses, such as B.Sc.Ed. in Physics, Biology, and Mathematics, alongside B.Ed. options in Educational Management, Early Childhood, and Adult Education.
The expansion also covers science education, health sciences, and specialized laboratory technologies. New healthcare programmes include B.Sc. Community Health, Medical Laboratory Science, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Radiography, and Optometry. Additionally, FUD will offer B.Sc. degrees in Parasitology and Entomology, Environmental Standards, Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Applied Geology, and Remote Sensing.
The NUC's approval also includes postgraduate programmes, such as PGD, M.Sc., and PhD tracks in Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, Banking and Finance, and Information Technology. Professional Masters programmes in Banking and Finance and Accounting and Finance were also approved. Vice-Chancellor Ahmad Gumel welcomed the development, describing it as a pivotal moment for the institution.
Gumel noted that the new programmes are designed to address the evolving educational needs of society, focusing on critical areas such as technology, science education, and health-related disciplines. The strategic academic growth aims to equip students with relevant skills and knowledge that align with current industry demands and societal challenges.
