The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos state command, has arrested two women, aged 48 and 50, for their alleged involvement in producing adulterated fruit juice at an illegal factory in Badagry, Lagos state. The arrest followed a five-day surveillance operation that led to the shutdown of the suspected factory allegedly producing fake "Barkas Juice." The operation was carried out in collaboration with a Nigerian Army formation in the area.
According to NSCDC spokesperson Superintendent of Corps, SC Abolurin Oluwaseun, the operation took place between 9 pm on Saturday, September 19, and the early hours of Sunday, September 20, 2026. Some youths attempted to resist the operation, but security personnel eventually gained access to the premises. Intelligence obtained through the Command's community engagement initiatives contributed to the successful operation.
Preliminary investigation by the NSCDC indicated that the suspected fake juice was produced by mixing water with synthetic flavorings, industrial sweeteners, artificial colorants, dyes, and chemical preservatives, without using real fruit. The product allegedly contained high levels of sugar, colorants, dyes, and other additives, raising concerns over possible health implications for consumers.
The alleged owner of the business reportedly told investigators that the enterprise was inherited from her grandmother about 20 years ago. The grandmother initially produced water before the business was expanded into fruit juice production. The NSCDC alleged that the suspected adulterated juice was produced in an unhygienic environment and distributed to markets in Lagos, Benin City, Edo State, and other parts of the country.
The product was marketed with a purportedly fake NAFDAC registration number, "01-2166L." Items recovered from the premises included a truck, cartons of the suspected fake juice, production machinery, chemicals, drums, and gas cylinders. The Lagos state Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Adedotun Keshinro, stated that the suspects would undergo further investigation before being prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Keshinro ordered the immediate closure of the unregistered factory to prevent further production and distribution of the suspected adulterated product. The Command will collaborate with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and other relevant agencies to ensure proper investigation and prosecution.
The NSCDC urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide security agencies with credible information on suspected illegal production and distribution of adulterated consumer products. The Corps' continued engagement with communities across Lagos has strengthened public confidence and improved intelligence sharing between residents and security formations.
