The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and supported by the European Union (EU) has concluded a three-day workshop to review the 2019-2023 National Border Management Strategy (NBMS) and its Action Plan. The workshop held from September 27 to 30, 2026, at Zuma Rock Resort, Niger State, aimed to assess progress and identify key priorities for strengthening Nigeria's border management framework. This review is in preparation for the next policy cycle covering 2027-2031.

The Comptroller-General of NIS, KN Nandap, emphasized the need for the next strategy to be based on credible migration data, effective implementation mechanisms, and sustained inter-agency collaboration. According to the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, Nandap stressed that the review should produce a clear and actionable framework to address emerging border management and security challenges. This framework aims to position Nigeria to provide leadership in integrated border management across Africa.

The workshop featured strategic discussions, technical sessions, group presentations, and the consolidation of review outcomes. An NIS Executive Management Endorsement Session was held where key recommendations were reviewed and endorsed, interventions prioritized, financing options considered, and the proposed strategic direction for the 2027-2031 policy cycle validated. This session ensured that the outcomes of the workshop were aligned with the goals of the NIS and its partners.

The NIS, IOM, and EU collaboration demonstrates a commitment to improving border management in Nigeria. The review of the NBMS and its Action Plan is crucial in addressing the dynamic nature of border security challenges. By reassessing priorities and strategies, Nigeria aims to enhance its border management capabilities and contribute to regional security and stability.

This engagement is expected to lead to a more effective and sustainable border management strategy that can address current and emerging challenges. The NIS has reaffirmed its commitment to sustained collaboration and continuous improvement in border management.

The next policy cycle, covering 2027-2031, is expected to build on the lessons learned from the 2019-2023 strategy and address emerging challenges.
