A road traffic crash along the Ijebu-Ode–Ore Road in Nigeria's Ogun State has resulted in the deaths of nine people. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Sector Command, confirmed the incident, which occurred at about 4:55 pm at the Bethel area within the Ijebu-Ode Unit Command. The crash involved a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus and a white Sino Truck commercial vehicle.

According to the FRSC, the crash occurred during rainfall, when the road pavement was wet. Preliminary investigation identified speed violation as the probable cause of the crash. The command said its rescue team arrived at the scene at about 4:58 pm, two minutes after receiving the report. The FRSC's swift response facilitated the evacuation of the victims and the towing of the vehicles involved.

The FRSC reported that the nine victims, comprising three males and six females, died in the crash. Their bodies were evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital Morgue, Ijebu-Ode. The vehicles involved were towed to the Ilese Police Station by the Ilese Police Motor Traffic Division. The incident has raised concerns about road safety during rainy seasons.

The Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to exercise maximum caution while driving during rainfall. He advised motorists to obey speed limits, maintain safe following distances, and avoid driving practices that could endanger lives. Speeding on wet roads can be particularly hazardous.

Commander Ogunjobi noted that reduced tyre grip and visibility may make it more difficult for motorists to control their vehicles or stop safely. The FRSC expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged all road users to make safety their priority at all times. Road safety experts have emphasized the need for drivers to adapt to changing road conditions.

The FRSC's public education efforts aim to raise awareness about the risks associated with speeding and reckless driving. Motorists are encouraged to take responsibility for their safety and that of others on the road. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to road safety guidelines.

The FRSC and other stakeholders are working to prevent similar incidents in the future. The sector commander emphasized the need for a collaborative effort to promote road safety and reduce the incidence of fatal crashes. The government and road safety agencies are urging motorists to be vigilant and prioritize safety.
