The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) is working on a bill to be proposed to the National Assembly to ensure a structured salary for journalists. This initiative aims to promote media development, professional excellence, and welfare of journalists. NUJ National President, Comr. Alhassan Yahya, stated that the bill is necessary to address the poor remuneration of journalists despite their significant contributions to sustaining democracy in Nigeria.
Speaking during the fourth edition of NUJ's Annual Milestone Recognition of Media Icons in Nigeria, Yahya lamented that the journalism profession has been left behind in terms of remuneration. He emphasized that the NUJ is open to discussions and is integrating with other professional bodies to come up with an initiative for the bill. The bill's goal is to change the narrative and ensure that journalists are properly compensated for their work.
Yahya appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the issue of poor remuneration for journalists. He cited the recent increase in salary structure for judicial workers and asked why journalists should not also receive a similar increase. The NUJ president expressed hope that the President would partner with the union to find a solution.
The event, which celebrated outstanding achievements in the media industry, recognized courage, professionalism, sacrifice, and commitment to truth, public enlightenment, and national beauty. Some of those honored include Martuns Oloja, Sumner Shagari Sambo, Tabutha Sani Kangiwa, Chief Eric Teniola, Segun Adeniyi, Azubuike Ishiekwene, Comr. Franz Ndulue, Kingsley Datubor Uranta, and Adetoro Oladapo.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, who spoke at the event, emphasized the importance of a free press in a democratic society. He stated that democracy depends on citizens having access to reliable information, the freedom to express their views, and the opportunity to hold public officials accountable. The governor acknowledged the sacrifices of journalists in returning Nigeria to democracy and ensuring press freedom.
The immediate past President of NUJ, Christopher Isiguzo, urged the media to resist attempts to weaponize information for political advantage. He emphasized the importance of professional journalism in an age of social media and instant communication, stressing that accuracy and truth should take precedence over being first.
The NUJ's initiative for a structured salary bill is a significant step towards addressing the welfare of journalists in Nigeria. With the support of the President and other stakeholders, the union hopes to achieve a better remuneration package for journalists. This move is expected to enhance the quality of journalism in Nigeria and promote a more sustainable media industry.
