Queinette Ihuoma Eze, a Nigerian entrepreneur, has achieved remarkable success in the fragrance industry with her brand, Beguile. Despite being trained in building structures, Ihuoma built a fragrance house that now serves customers on three continents. Her approach to perfume creation is centered around a simple rule: "no compliments, no approval." This means that before any Beguile perfume reaches a customer, Ihuoma wears it herself for months, and if it does not earn her compliments, it never launches.
Ihuoma's journey into the fragrance industry began with her mother, who had a vast perfume collection and took her time getting ready. Growing up in a house with perfume in almost every corner, Ihuoma developed a love for fragrances. Her mother is still part of every new creation, getting to smell each new perfume before anyone else. Ihuoma's background, however, did not point to a career in perfume. She earned a degree in Building Technology at Obafemi Awolowo University and moved to Dubai in 2019.
The pandemic brought Ihuoma's plans to a halt in 2020, but she used the lockdown to research and learn about the fragrance industry. She identified a gap in the market, particularly in Nigeria, where there were few homegrown fragrance houses. Ihuoma saw an opportunity and decided to enter the industry early, with the goal of becoming unstoppable. She surrounded herself with great perfumery and experienced manufacturers in Dubai, which inspired her to create her first fragrance, Seduction.
Beguile was officially born in 2021, with Seduction and Passion as its first two fragrances. The brand has since grown to include ten fragrances, seven perfumes, and three perfume oils. Ihuoma's standards have never relaxed, with every fragrance being worn, tested, and complimented before a customer ever smells it. This approach has contributed to Beguile's success, with the brand now serving customers in Nigeria, the UK, the US, and Canada.
One of the biggest challenges Beguile faces is selling perfume across borders, due to regulations and logistics. The US market has proven to be particularly tough, but Ihuoma was determined to enter it. In 2022, she moved to London for a master's degree and stepped back from the business, but she never stopped believing in Beguile. When she returned, she built something even bigger and better, with Mystique becoming a bestseller almost overnight in 2024.
Mystique's success was a significant milestone for Beguile, with 100 orders received in a single day. The brand now handles thousands of orders in a typical month. With bases in the UK, the US, and Canada, Beguile serves customers locally in each country, catering to different tastes and preferences. Ihuoma finds it fascinating that her bestseller in Nigeria is not necessarily her bestseller in Canada.
Ihuoma's ambitions for Beguile are global, with a goal to make the brand a household name in the fragrance industry. She wants Beguile to be a force to be reckoned with, a powerhouse from Africa that the entire world knows and loves. As a woman founder, Ihuoma has never treated her gender as a disadvantage, instead using her understanding of what women love and want to drive her business.
