Nigeria is undergoing a significant national transformation and a reset of its political values, according to scholars. The Head of Department of Foreign Languages at Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Saheed Timeyin, and the Founder and Chairman of the Ashraaf Islamic Foundation, Imam Dr. Sharafudeen Aliagan, made this assertion in Abuja. They emphasized the need for moral integrity, sincere leadership, and non-material heritage.
The scholars made these statements at the 10th Annual Mawlid Nabiyy celebration themed "Inheritance Beyond Wealth: Preserving the Legacy of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in Modern Time." They charged politicians and the electorate to prioritize moral integrity, sincere leadership, and non-material heritage over fleeting material gains. The event provided a platform for discussing Nigeria's political trajectory and the need for a value reset.
According to Prof. Timeyin, Nigeria has undergone significant changes in the last four years, with a clear shift in public consciousness and values taking place across the country. He noted that managing the nation's political progression demands a governance approach tailored to Nigeria's multi-faceted socio-political climate. Prof. Timeyin emphasized that standard solutions fall short in addressing the country's complex needs.
Prof. Timeyin advised voters to abandon sentimental choices and align their voting decisions with strict moral standards and Quranic principles regarding trust and public accountability. Citing Surah An-Nisa, Verse 58, he emphasized that leadership is a sacred trust (Amanah) that must only be conferred upon individuals with proven capacity and integrity. This approach is crucial in ensuring that leadership is based on merit and moral character.
Imam Dr. Sharafudeen Aliagan corroborated Prof. Timeyin's views, warning that Nigeria can no longer afford leadership failure or recurring political missteps as political actors begin positioning themselves for 2027. He urged both Christians and Muslims to let the true principles of their respective faiths reflect in their political conduct, cautioning against pursuing public office solely for personal gain or appointments.
Dr. Aliagan emphasized that true inheritance (Al-Tarikah) extends far beyond physical property or estate distribution. He noted that the legacy of Rasulullah concerning inheritance starts with wisdom, moral character, sincerity towards Allah, and how one lives their life before death. Dr. Aliagan urged parents and national leaders to equip the younger generation with righteousness and integrity to sustain the ongoing national reset.
