The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) began on November 1, 2026, in St John's, Antigua and Barbuda, and will run until November 4. The meeting brings together leaders from Commonwealth member states to discuss policies aimed at strengthening socio-economic ties. However, Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu is noticeably absent from the gathering. According to a statement from presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, Mr. Tinubu traveled to Saudi Arabia to perform the lesser Hajj, also known as Umrah.

Mr. Tinubu's absence from the CHOGM is not an isolated incident. He has not attended the United Nations General Assembly in the United States since his inauguration in 2023. In 2024, he delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him at the Commonwealth meeting, but Mr. Shettima was unable to attend due to a technical issue with his aircraft. Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, subsequently led the Nigerian delegation to the meeting. This year, Mr. Tinubu sent a delegation, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, to represent him.

The President's decision to skip the CHOGM has raised questions about his priorities and commitment to international engagements. According to Mr. Onanuga, Mr. Tinubu prayed for Nigeria and its citizens during his Umrah, ahead of the general elections scheduled for January and February 2027. However, the vagueness surrounding the President's travel plans and expected return date has sparked rumors about his health and ability to discharge his duties.

The Commonwealth meeting provides a platform for member states to discuss pressing global issues, including economic development, climate change, and human rights. The meeting also offers an opportunity for leaders to foster greater cooperation and collaboration among Commonwealth nations. King Charles III, a prominent figure in the Commonwealth, was scheduled to attend the meeting.

The Nigerian delegation, led by Ms. Ojukwu and Mr. Akume, will participate in the meeting and represent Nigeria's interests. However, the absence of Mr. Tinubu, the country's President, may be seen as a missed opportunity for Nigeria to play a more active role in shaping the Commonwealth's agenda.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, has expressed her disappointment at Mr. Tinubu's absence. She noted that the CHOGM provides a critical platform for leaders to engage in meaningful discussions and make collective decisions that can positively impact the lives of millions of people across the Commonwealth.

In a statement, the Commonwealth Secretary-General said that the meeting will focus on strengthening socio-economic ties among member states and promoting economic opportunities. The outcome of the meeting is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of citizens across the Commonwealth.
