Leaders of Nigeria's opposition political parties, under the aegis of the G-100, met with Cardinal John Onaiyekan in Abuja on October 29, 2026. The meeting was part of the coalition's ongoing engagements ahead of the 2027 general election. The G-100 aims to field a single presidential candidate to enhance its chances of defeating President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the January 16, 2027 presidential contest.
The G-100 coalition currently comprises the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The opposition leaders, consisting of national chairmen and national secretaries of the political parties, briefed Onaiyekan on the initiative to unite the opposition ahead of the contest.
According to a statement by Salihu Lukman, the opposition leaders informed Onaiyekan about the progress made so far, including the conclusion of work on the Working Papers of the Coalition. The papers cover the National Covenant for Democratic Renewal, the Framework for Opposition Unity, and the National Reform Programme. These documents outline the principles of the Coalition, describe how the coalition will work, and set out what a government built on this cooperation would seek to do for Nigerians.
Onaiyekan emphasized the role of competent, honest, and sympathetic leaders in resolving the multiple problems that make decent lives of citizens difficult or impossible to sustain. The G-100 leaders are working to conclude and adopt these working papers and hold a Second Summit on November 9, 2026, where all the political parties under the Coalition will publicly endorse and unveil these Working papers.
The G-100 is pushing for the opposition to field a single presidential candidate to enhance its chances of winning the 2027 presidential election. The coalition plans to meet with other distinguished Nigerians and Diplomatic Missions in the coming weeks. This move is seen as an effort to expand the coalition and admit more opposition parties.
The meeting with Onaiyekan was seen as a significant step towards uniting the opposition and presenting a credible alternative to the current government. The G-100 coalition believes that a united front is necessary to rescue the country from its current challenges.
The opposition parties under the G-100 Coalition are set to public endorse and unveil their Working papers on November 9, 2026. This event is expected to be a major milestone in the coalition's efforts to present a united front ahead of the 2027 general election.
