The National Payment Stack (NPS) in Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 100 million successful transactions as of September 25, 2026. This accomplishment is a major step in the country's drive to modernize its payment system and deepen financial inclusion. The NPS, operated by the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) Plc, has become a crucial component in Nigeria's financial landscape.

The NPS is built around the ISO 20022 global messaging standard, enabling financial institutions to exchange richer and more structured payment information. This standard enhances interoperability, improves straight-through processing, and provides better data for transparency, fraud monitoring, and regulatory reporting. By adopting this standard, the NPS has set a new benchmark for payment systems in Nigeria.

The payment infrastructure serves a diverse range of financial institutions, including commercial banks, microfinance banks, fintech companies, mobile money operators, and other payment service providers. By providing a unified payment rail, the NPS has helped reduce integration challenges and costs for financial institutions, while supporting faster innovation in payment services. This has created a more efficient and competitive payment ecosystem in Nigeria.

The impact of the NPS extends beyond the formal banking system, providing faster, more reliable, and secure access to digital financial services for small businesses, merchants, agents, and individuals. The platform's security architecture and end-to-end protection have strengthened confidence in Nigeria's payment ecosystem, which is essential for promoting financial inclusion and economic growth.

NIBSS Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Premier Oiwoh, attributed the milestone to the collective effort to build a world-class payment system for Nigeria. He emphasized that the achievement demonstrates the progress made in creating a secure, inclusive, and globally competitive payments system. The NPS has become a critical component in Nigeria's financial infrastructure, supporting the country's economic development.

The NPS has been designed to support the growth of digital payments in Nigeria, which is a key driver of financial inclusion. By providing a secure and efficient payment platform, the NPS has enabled more people to access financial services, which is essential for promoting economic growth and reducing poverty. The platform's success is a testament to the potential for digital payments to transform Nigeria's financial landscape.

NIBSS plans to continue working with the Central Bank of Nigeria, deposit money banks, microfinance banks, payment service banks, fintechs, and other stakeholders to develop a secure, inclusive, and globally competitive payments system. The company aims to build on the success of the NPS, further enhancing its capabilities and expanding its reach to promote financial inclusion and economic growth in Nigeria.
