Nigeria's presence in the women's categories of the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards has significantly declined, with the country missing out on some individual honours it had consistently contested in previous editions. Despite being one of Africa's most successful countries in women's football, Nigeria will have a reduced presence at this year's awards, particularly in the prestigious Women's Player of the Year and Women's Goalkeeper of the Year categories. This marks a notable departure from previous years when Nigerian players regularly featured among the continent's leading contenders.
The most notable omission is the absence of a Nigerian player from the 10-woman shortlist for the Women's Player of the Year award, ending the country's uninterrupted representation in the category since its introduction in 2001. Nigeria has historically enjoyed considerable success in the award, winning it 13 times through four players, including Perpetua Nkwocha, Asisat Oshoala, Cynthia Uwak, and Mercy Akide. However, none of the country's current stars, including Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade, made the 2026 shortlist.
Another significant disappointment for Nigeria is the absence of Chiamaka Nnadozie from the Women's Goalkeeper of the Year category. The former Paris FC goalkeeper had established herself as one of the continent's outstanding goalkeepers, winning the award three consecutive times before the 2026 edition. Her consistent performances for club and country had made her one of Nigeria's most recognisable representatives at the annual ceremony.
However, the 2026 shortlist does not include the Super Falcons goalkeeper, leaving Nigeria with Christiana Uzoma as its sole representative in the category. The 17-year-old Edo Queens goalkeeper has earned recognition following her performances and will be hoping to continue Nigeria's history of success in the award. She faces competition from Morocco's Khadija Er-Rmichi, South Africa's Kaylin Swart, and Zambia's Hazel Nali, among other nominees.
Despite Nigeria's setbacks in the individual categories, the Super Falcons have maintained their presence in the Women's National Team of the Year category. The nine-time African champions are among the nominees for the team award, following their involvement in continental football during the period under consideration. Nigeria will compete against other national teams, including Cameroon, Morocco, South Africa, Ghana, and Malawi.
Nigeria has secured representation in the Women's Young Player of the Year award, with Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi earning nominations. Their inclusion offers encouragement for Nigerian women's football, particularly at a time when the country is seeking to build a new generation of players capable of sustaining its continental reputation.
The 2026 CAF Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on December 7 in Lagos, where Nigeria will hope its remaining nominees can convert their nominations into continental honours. The country's reduced representation raises questions about its ability to sustain its traditional dominance in individual women's football honours, with younger players carrying much of the country's individual representation.
