The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 3000 personnel in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to enforce law and order during Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary celebrations. According to the NSCDC spokesperson in the FCT, DSC Monica Ojobi, the deployed personnel cut across specialised departments and units of the Corps. The deployment aims to ensure a peaceful and secure celebration in the nation's capital.
The deployed personnel include officers and men from the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Agro Rangers, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE), and Counter Terrorism Unit. These units will provide security coverage in volatile areas and soft targets such as shopping malls, recreational centres, markets, motor parks, and amusement parks. The NSCDC also plans to provide security for Critical National Assets and Infrastructure.
In addition to the overt deployment, the NSCDC has also deployed undercover personnel for covert operations and surveillance. This proactive measure aims to prevent emergencies or unforeseen circumstances during the celebrations. The undercover unit will monitor black spots like uncompleted buildings that harbour criminals to avert security breaches.
The Commandant of the NSCDC FCT Command, Olusola Odumosu, PhD, has given marching orders to all Area Commanders and Divisional Officers to ensure their respective area councils are secure. He directed them to be proactive and ensure their presence is felt to avoid security hitches. Dr Odumosu warned that he will not tolerate any form of security breaches and emphasised the need for all hands to be on deck.
