Nigeria and Greece are moving to deepen bilateral relations as Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi begins his tour of Ambassadorial duty in Athens. The Nigerian envoy formally assumed his diplomatic responsibilities after presenting his Letters of Credence to Greek President Constantine An. Tassoulas at the Presidential Mansion in Athens on September 16, 2026.
Ugwuanyi said his mission would pursue new areas of bilateral cooperation, strengthen institutional partnerships and facilitate greater private-sector engagement as part of efforts to produce tangible benefits from the relationship. At the ceremony, Ugwuanyi conveyed President Bola Tinubu's greetings to President Tassoulas and reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to advancing relations with Greece under the Federal Government's 4Ds foreign policy framework.
The credential ceremony was attended by senior Greek officials, including the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, senior officials of the Presidency, the Chief of Protocol, the Director of the Military Office and the Director of the Diplomatic Office. This development marks the formal beginning of the ambassador's diplomatic engagement in Greece and provides a fresh platform for both countries to build on their existing relationship.
At the meeting with President Tassoulas, Ugwuanyi conveyed the greetings and best wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government and the people of Nigeria to the Greek President, Government and people. The envoy reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to strengthening the friendship and cooperation between the two countries, while signalling a shift towards more practical areas of engagement.
Ugwuanyi said he was prepared to work with the Greek Government to identify fresh opportunities for bilateral cooperation, strengthen institutional partnerships and facilitate greater engagement between the private sectors of both countries. He also stressed the need for initiatives that would deliver mutually beneficial outcomes, suggesting that his diplomatic mission would place greater emphasis on translating existing goodwill between Nigeria and Greece into measurable cooperation.
The ambassador's agenda is also expected to align with Nigeria's foreign policy thrust under the 4Ds — Demography, Development, Diaspora and Democracy.
