The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken a significant step towards enhancing its military capabilities with the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from the United States. This development is part of the government's efforts to modernize the Armed Forces and provide the military with additional platforms to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats. The agreement was marked by a beam-signing ceremony at the Bell Textron facility in Amarillo, Texas.
The Nigerian Air Force delegation, led by Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, attended the ceremony, which signifies the beginning of production of the helicopters for Nigeria. The AH-1Z Viper is an attack helicopter designed for combat operations and close support of ground forces. Its acquisition is expected to add another specialized platform to the Nigerian Air Force's rotary-wing capabilities, enhancing its ability to conduct precision-guided and unguided weapons operations.
Air Marshal Aneke described the programme as an important development in strengthening the operational capacity of the Nigerian Air Force. He emphasized that the acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters represents a significant milestone in the effort to build a more capable, professional, and mission-ready Nigerian Air Force. The Air Chief also acknowledged the role of President Bola Tinubu in the ongoing military modernization programme, expressing appreciation for his strategic leadership and commitment to strengthening Nigeria's defence and security architecture.
The Chief of the Air Staff also thanked the United States Government, Bell Textron, Programme Management Air 276, and other parties involved in the AH-1Z Viper programme. He emphasized that sustained defence cooperation, technical collaboration, and capability development remain essential to the successful implementation of the project. The ceremony in Texas also provided the Nigerian delegation with an opportunity to inspect the production line where the helicopters are being manufactured.
Bell Textron confirmed that production of the first Nigerian AH-1Z Viper had commenced at its Amarillo facility, with the company expected to complete production of the 12 aircraft in the coming years, projected for completion in early 2029. The wider Nigerian Viper programme involves more than the aircraft alone, including associated equipment, weapons, training, logistics, and other support required to introduce the platform into operational service.
The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters is part of a larger effort by the Federal Government to increase investment in the Nigerian military's aviation capabilities. Recently, the Nigerian Air Force received five new helicopters, comprising three AW-109 Trekker B helicopters manufactured by Leonardo Helicopters of Italy and two H-125 helicopters produced by Airbus Helicopters. These platforms are expected to support intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, close air support, armed escort, combat search and rescue, and other joint operations involving surface forces.
The induction of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force is expected to complement existing aircraft and helicopters already being used for surveillance, troop support, and combat operations. The aircraft is designed to operate with precision-guided and unguided weapons and can support a range of military missions. The United States Department of Defense awarded Bell a contract in March 2024 for the manufacture of the 12 helicopters for Nigeria through the Foreign Military Sales programme.
