The Planification et Financement de l'Adaptation aux changements climatiques au Niger (PFAN) project recently convened its final steering committee session in Maradi, Niger. The event, presided over by Abdoul Karim Mahamadou, Secretary General of the Maradi Region, took place on October 29, 2026. The session aimed to assess the project's achievements during its implementation period, identifying factors contributing to its success and areas for improvement.

In his opening speech, Mahamadou emphasized the importance of evaluating the project's outcomes to ensure the sustainability of its results. He expressed gratitude to the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for their technical and financial support. The project, launched in 2021, focused on enhancing the resilience of vulnerable populations and national and local authorities to climate-related risks and vulnerabilities.

Colonel Yacouba Magagi, Executive Secretary of the National Council for Environment and Sustainable Development (CNEDD) and chair of the steering committee, highlighted the project's achievements in the water sector. He commended the project management unit and implementation partners for their efforts, acknowledging the support of the GEF and UNDP. The session featured presentations on the project's final report, evaluation, and exit strategies.

The steering committee adopted the project's final report, pending consideration of observations. The session concluded with a communiqué outlining several recommendations. These included consolidating project achievements in beneficiary communes and exploring possibilities for a second project phase. Participants also suggested that the UNDP examine the potential for developing irrigated agricultural sites in specific communes.

The project's impact was acknowledged by the administrators of communes where the PFAN intervened. They stated that the project had significantly improved living conditions and enabled communes to update their planning tools. The administrators called for additional resources to sustain and expand project achievements, expressing gratitude to the CNEDD, GEF, and UNDP.

The PFAN project operated in several communes across Niger, focusing on adapting the water sector to climate change. Its interventions took place in the regions of Tahoua, Tillabéri, and Zinder. The project's outcomes align with the vision of Niger's President, Abdourahamane Tiani, and contribute to the country's efforts to address climate-related challenges.

The final steering committee session marked the conclusion of the PFAN project's implementation period. The project's achievements and lessons learned will inform future initiatives aimed at enhancing climate resilience in Niger.
