On October 9, 2026, Niger's Energy Minister, Colonel Alzouma Seyni, presented a positive assessment of his mission to the Agadez region, which took place from October 7 to 8, 2026. The mission aimed to evaluate the state of energy infrastructure, discuss challenges with local authorities and technical teams, and identify priority actions to enhance electricity production, transportation, and distribution.
Colonel Alzouma Seyni's mission was guided by the country's President, General Abdourahamane Tiani, and Prime Minister, Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine. The minister emphasized the importance of ensuring access to reliable and quality energy, a major concern for consumers. He noted that the region's energy needs are legitimate and must be considered in investment planning.
During the mission, Colonel Alzouma Seyni visited key energy infrastructure in Agadez, including the NIGELEC thermal power plant and the 25 MW hybrid power plant project. The NIGELEC plant has an estimated capacity of 16 MW, but its available power varies between 7.5 and 8 MW, depending on the SONICHAR plant's availability. Local production stands at 2.3 MW, meeting only 14% of the region's needs.
The minister also inspected the construction site of the 25 MW hybrid power plant, which combines a 7.4 MW solar power component with a 4 MW thermal component. He then visited the Agadez Regional Energy Directorate, which faces challenges due to understaffing and inadequate logistical resources, including vehicles and computer equipment.
Colonel Alzouma Seyni expressed concern over the Directorate's outdated premises and insufficient office space. At the CONTRELEC antenna, responsible for controlling electrical installation conformity and safety, the minister noted a shortage of personnel and vehicles, hindering their ability to perform their duties effectively.
The minister reported that the Agadez region has 64,797 registered subscribers to the NIGELEC, but the area faces a production deficit due to rapid demand growth. This shortage has resulted in difficulties in meeting the region's energy needs.
The mission's findings will likely inform future investments in the region's energy sector, with a focus on addressing the identified challenges and improving the overall quality of service. The minister's assessment highlights the need for strategic planning and resource allocation to meet the growing energy demands of the Agadez region.
