The governor of Niger's Diffa region, General Mahamadou Ibrahim Bagadoma, launched two humanitarian projects on October 22, 2026, aimed at addressing the region's pressing needs. The projects, titled Projet de Réponse Humanitaire Intégrée Santé-WASH (PRHISWA) and Rapid Emergency Assistance for Conflict-Affected Households (REACH), were unveiled at a ceremony attended by administrative, military, and customary officials, as well as representatives from the United Nations and World Vision.
The PRHISWA project, funded by the Regional Humanitarian Fund for West and Central Africa (FHRAOC), is an 18-month initiative that will be implemented by a consortium comprising World Vision, DRC, and ANSH. The project's primary objective is to improve access to healthcare, water, hygiene, and sanitation services, while enhancing the resilience of communities in the departments of Diffa, N'Guigmi, and Mainé Soroa.
The second project, REACH, is financed by Aktion Deutschland Hilft (ADH) through World Vision Niger and KARKARA. With a duration of 12 months, REACH will provide multisectoral assistance to households affected by crises, focusing on food security, nutrition, WASH, protection, and economic recovery. This project aims to address the immediate needs of affected populations while fostering sustainable recovery.
The launch of these projects is particularly significant, given the Diffa region's protracted crisis, which has been exacerbated by insecurity and recurring climatic shocks. According to Edouard Kpodahi, head of the OCHA sub-bureau, the region's situation demands an integrated humanitarian response, which is why PRHISWA adopts a comprehensive approach, combining health and WASH interventions.
Jean de Dieu Uwamungu Kagen, representative of World Vision Niger, emphasized that these projects aim to address the immediate needs of populations while strengthening their capacity to cope with crises in a sustainable manner. The governor of the Diffa region expressed his appreciation for the projects, highlighting their potential to enhance the quality, effectiveness, and sustainability of interventions in the region.
The PRHISWA and REACH projects are expected to make a significant impact on the lives of affected populations in the Diffa region. By addressing the interconnected challenges of health, water, sanitation, and economic stability, these initiatives aim to promote durable solutions and enhance the resilience of local communities.
Key stakeholders, including government officials, humanitarian organizations, and local communities, are working together to ensure the success of these projects. With their combined efforts, the Diffa region may begin to see improvements in the well-being and living conditions of its residents, ultimately contributing to a more stable and prosperous future.
