The Governor of Niger's Agadez region, General Ibra Boulama Issa, has launched the second phase of subsidized local rice sales. The initiative includes 90 tonnes of rice, comprising 3,600 bags of three rice varieties: Bondourey, Dambou, and Brabous-Ko. The rice is entirely produced in Niger, emphasizing the country's agricultural capabilities. This operation aims to support local consumption and promote food sovereignty.
The subsidized rice sale is part of Niger's Refondation program, focusing on food sovereignty and self-sufficiency. According to General Boulama, this initiative demonstrates the country's ability to produce its own food, thanks to the Programme de la Grande Irrigation (PGI) and the efforts of the Office National d'Hydraulique et d'Assistance (ONAHA) and its producers. The program is backed by the highest authorities, including President General Abdourahamane Tiani.
General Boulama emphasized that consuming locally produced rice is crucial for creating jobs and combating unemployment among young people. He also highlighted the significance of solidarity and national unity, as rice produced in one region can feed populations in another. The Governor expressed gratitude to the ONAHA, the Fonds de solidarité pour la sauvegarde de la patrie (FSSP), and the Riz Niger Interprofessionnel (RINI) for their roles in the initiative.
The FSSP's Representative, Secretary General Adjoint Djibo Oumarou, stated that this phase of the subsidized rice sale aligns with the Refondation program's strategic objectives, particularly in developing production bases for economic sovereignty. The initiative also aims to promote citizen engagement and social mobilization.
The subsidized rice sale is expected to benefit the local population, who are encouraged to purchase the rice to support national producers. General Boulama urged the population to turn out in large numbers to buy the rice, emphasizing its good quality, cleanliness, and proper conditioning.
The launch of the second subsidized rice sale phase demonstrates Niger's commitment to achieving food sovereignty and self-sufficiency. The initiative is part of a broader effort to promote local consumption, create jobs, and support national producers.
The successful implementation of this initiative could have a positive impact on Niger's food security and economy. The country's efforts to promote local production and consumption are crucial in addressing the challenges of food sovereignty and unemployment.
