The Nigerien government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of older persons, as the country joins the international community to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons on October 1, 2026. The theme of this year's celebration is "The older person, a better life partner: improving the health of older persons contributes to the country's development." This day was established by the United Nations in 1990 to promote dignified aging, health, security, and well-being.
The Minister of Population, Social Action, and Solidarity, Pr Sidikou Ramatou Djermakoye Seyni, has emphasized that the theme aligns with the spirit of the Refondation, which advocates for a return to ancestral social values, with older persons being the guardians and legitimate depositaries of these values. According to the minister, older persons, affectionately referred to as "seniors," are those aged 60-65 and above, representing 4.2% of Niger's population, a proportion that is constantly increasing due to improved life expectancy.
The minister highlighted that the government's commitment to improving the living conditions of older persons is reflected in the adoption of Ordinance No. 2024-20 of May 29, 2024, which establishes the fundamental principles of protection for older persons and consecrates their rights in the areas of health, transportation, and public life. The Refondation de la République 2025-2029 program aims to extend quality healthcare and social protection to older persons, addressing their major concerns.
The activities commemorating this day aim to raise awareness about the challenges of aging, promote the prevention of age-related diseases, and advocate for geriatrics and gerontology. The minister emphasized the crucial role of older persons in Nigerien society, citing their wisdom, guidance of youth, consolidation of peace, social cohesion, and national unity.
Pr Sidikou Ramatou Djermakoye Seyni stressed that older persons are considered partners by her ministry, whose experience and expertise are essential for guiding younger generations and preparing future ones. She reassured that the government is committed to working towards the protection and promotion of older persons' rights.
The International Day of Older Persons was established by the United Nations in 1990 through Resolution 45/106, with the aim of promoting dignified aging. The day's celebrations serve as an opportunity to recognize the contributions and challenges faced by older persons worldwide.
As Niger celebrates this day, the government has reiterated its commitment to addressing the specific needs of older persons and promoting their well-being. The country's efforts to improve the lives of older persons align with international efforts to promote healthy aging and protect the rights of older persons globally.
