The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) recorded a marginal recovery on Tuesday, as market capitalisation increased by N28 billion from N165.079 trillion at the opening to N165.107 trillion at the close of trading. The All-Share Index (ASI) also advanced by 44.14 points, representing a 0.02 percent increase from 254,245.21 to 254,289.35 points. This modest gain followed Monday's decline, when market capitalisation shed N35 billion, and the benchmark index fell by 0.02 percent.

Despite the positive movement in the headline indicators, market breadth remained negative, with 20 equities appreciating in price against 32 decliners. The higher number of declining stocks indicated that selling pressure continued to outweigh buying interest across several listed equities. This trend suggests that investor sentiment remains cautious, despite the slight improvement in the headline indicators.

Among the top gainers, Union Dicon Salt Plc advanced by 9.52 percent (N4.20 to N4.60), while OmaTek Ventures gained 8.59 percent (N1.28 to N1.39). International Breweries rose by 6.47 percent (N8.50 to N9.05), Guinea Insurance appreciated by 5.26 percent (N0.76 to N0.80), and Royal Exchange gained 5.26 percent (N0.95 to N1.00).

On the other hand, Fortis Global Insurance fell by 10.00 percent (N1.70 to N1.53), Vitafoam Nigeria declined by 9.99 percent (N157.20 to N141.50), and UPDC Real Estate Investment Trust shed 9.95 percent (N21.10 to N19.00). Abbey Mortgage Bank lost 8.73 percent (N6.30 to N5.75), and Caverton Offshore Support Group declined by 7.58 percent (N3.30 to N3.05).

Several equities closed unchanged during the session, including First HoldCo, MTN Nigeria Communications, Presco Plc, Custodian Investment Plc, and Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, among others. The session reflected a market that remained largely subdued despite the marginal recovery in its benchmark indicators.

The increase in market capitalisation and the ASI was relatively small, while the higher number of decliners suggested that the improvement was not supported by broad-based buying interest. The unchanged positions recorded by several major equities further highlighted the mixed nature of the session, as some investors maintained their positions while trading activity in other stocks resulted in notable price movements.

Overall, Tuesday's marginal advance offered little indication of a decisive market recovery. The continued dominance of decliners suggests that investor sentiment remains cautious, despite the slight improvement in the headline indicators. Ogochukwu Onwaeze, a writer specializing in business and economic journalism, noted that the market trends, financial developments, and policy shifts would be crucial in shaping the market's future performance.
