Their scheduled appearance together at a rally in Narok on September 27 has sparked speculation about a potential formal political arrangement. This development adds to the existing tensions and realignments within the opposition.
The opposition principals, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Justin Muturi, have been holding joint rallies, but the emergence of competing political formations and separate mobilisation drives is raising questions about how the broad coalition will navigate the contest for the presidency. The Kalonzo-Wamalwa-Muturi axis is one of the groupings, which is involved in efforts to consolidate and popularise the newly rebranded outfit, The Ukombozi Alliance. Another grouping is emerging around Matiang'i, Nyoro, and Orengo.
Nyoro has been conducting a nationwide mobilisation campaign after his People's Party of Kenya (PPK) formally joined the opposition in August. The party has presented itself as part of the broader opposition effort while Nyoro has continued to build his own political profile. The political chemistry between Nyoro and Matiang'i has become a subject of intense speculation, particularly after their meetings in recent weeks.
Orengo's shifting political orbit has also contributed to the emerging realignment. The Siaya governor was previously firmly associated with the Linda Mwananchi camp but announced his intention to challenge Sifuna for the presidential ticket, a move that irked some of the Linda Mwananchi supporters. Orengo has since made subtle moves, including attending the launch of Nyoro's People's Party of Kenya and the rebranding of Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition into The Ukombozi Alliance.
Orengo's elevation as chairman of The Ukombozi Alliance has effectively placed him in direct collision with Sifuna, as reports emerged indicating the name Ukombozi had been reserved by Sifuna's team. This development has complicated Sifuna's efforts to establish a political vehicle ahead of his presidential ambitions. Sifuna now finds himself navigating an increasingly complicated political landscape.
The Linda Mwananchi movement initially brought together several prominent opposition figures, including Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. However, that configuration has changed, with Orengo assuming a senior role in The Ukombozi Alliance and working closely with Matiang'i and Nyoro. Babu Owino has also established his own political vehicle, the Mwananchi Party, further reducing the cohesion of the original formation.
Another significant piece of the puzzle is Rigathi Gachagua's Democratic for Citizens Party (DCP) and its standpoint ahead of the 2027 polls. The outfit, which has become a force to reckon with in the Mt Kenya region, has declined to join The Ukombozi Alliance. Deputy party leader Cleophas Malala indicated that the party would pursue an arrangement with Sifuna before considering a broader opposition coalition.
