The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria has issued a warning to commercial drivers and transport workers to be cautious when accepting parcels whose contents they are not aware of. This warning comes after a recent incident where a bus driver was nearly implicated in a drug trafficking case. The driver had accepted a bottle of Fearless energy drink as a waybill package for delivery to Ondo State, unaware that it contained concealed drugs.

According to NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the energy drink bottle was used to conceal Colos and methamphetamine. The driver spent some time in custody and would have ended up in jail if not for the intervention of NDLEA officers who tracked and arrested the person who gave him the package. Babafemi shared a Facebook post accompanied by videos showing operatives discovering the drug substances concealed inside the energy drink bottle.

The NDLEA spokesman emphasized that possession of illicit drugs could expose individuals to criminal liability, and urged drivers and members of the public to avoid accepting parcels without knowing their contents. He stressed that the law states that possession makes one culpable, and warned that not everyone may be as lucky as the bus driver in this case.

The incident highlights the need for vigilance among commercial drivers and transport workers. NDLEA officers were able to track and arrest the person who gave the driver the package, preventing the driver from being left solely responsible for the drugs found in the parcel. This incident serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to accept parcels without verifying their contents.

Babafemi's warning is part of the NDLEA's efforts to curb drug trafficking in Nigeria. The agency has been working to intercept and prevent the smuggling of illicit drugs into the country. In recent times, the NDLEA has made several notable seizures, including the interception of Colos shipments from the UK and the discovery of opioids in loaves of bread and speakers.

The NDLEA is urging the public to be aware of the risks associated with accepting parcels without verifying their contents. The agency is also encouraging individuals to report any suspicious activities to the authorities. By working together, the NDLEA aims to prevent drug trafficking and protect the public from the dangers associated with illicit drugs.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being cautious when dealing with unknown parcels. Commercial drivers and transport workers must be vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid being implicated in drug trafficking cases. The NDLEA will continue to work to prevent drug trafficking and protect the public.
