NCBA Bank Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to education, healthy living, and community development through its partnership with Makerere University. The sixth edition of the Makerere Marathon, held on September 27, brought together over 8,000 participants, including students, alumni, staff, corporate teams, athletes, and members of the public. The event aimed to promote wellness and raise funds for community programs at the university.
The marathon, organized by the Makerere University Endowment Fund (MAKEF), featured various races, including a 42.2km professional race, a 21km half marathon, a 10km sprint, a 5km challenge, and a 3km wheelchair challenge. The event started and finished at Freedom Square and was held under the theme "Run the Hills for the Future." NCBA Bank Uganda Executive Director Julius Konyani emphasized the importance of partnerships between the private sector and educational institutions in generating long-term benefits for communities.
The funds raised from the marathon will support the Makerere University Disability Support Unit through the provision of specialized assistive technologies and learning equipment. This partnership aligns with NCBA's "Change the Story" agenda, focusing on investments in education, sports, and sustainable community development. Konyani highlighted that supporting the Makerere Marathon is an investment in future generations who will benefit from a stronger and better-resourced university.
The marathon promotes physical activity and mental well-being among students, alumni, the Makerere community, and Kampala residents. It also contributes to initiatives supporting economically disadvantaged students. Konyani noted that participation in sports encourages healthier lifestyles and promotes values such as discipline, teamwork, resilience, and determination. The event is not just about competition but also about fostering a sense of community and promoting positive change.
NCBA Bank Uganda's support for the Makerere Marathon is part of its wider corporate social investment strategy, covering education, youth empowerment, sports development, entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, and environmental sustainability. In July, NCBA pledged Shs1.45 billion over five years to support the Makerere Marathon and the projects funded through the event. The proceeds will also contribute to a sustainable financing pool for economically disadvantaged students.
The participation of thousands of people from different backgrounds demonstrates the potential of collective action to address community needs. Konyani thanked participants for supporting the cause, stating that their involvement will contribute to improving educational opportunities while promoting healthier and more active communities. The marathon has grown into a major university-led sporting and fundraising event, combining competitive racing with initiatives aimed at strengthening Makerere's community programs.
The winners of the various races include Kibet Oscar and Kipsisi Eibern in the 42.2km race, James Kirwa and Drileba Leonard in the 21km half marathon, and Febia Chematai in the women's 21km category. Other winners include Semmy Aproru and Abel Aloki in the 10km sprint, Edian Nuwagaba and Isaaci Ocen in the 5km challenge, and Kule Katende Festus and Lauben Kato in the 3km wheelchair challenge.
