The Nasrul-Lahi-li Fathi Society of Nigeria (NASFAT), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and Fountain University Osogbo have issued a joint warning against drug abuse and social vices. This warning was given at the NASFAT National Counselling Conference held at Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State, with the theme: ‘Legacy of care: A strategic plan to serve the Ummah, 2027–2032’. The conference aimed to equip counsellors with the proper orientation to guide the Ummah and youth against bad habits.

NASFAT’s Vice President, Ajiroba Moroof, stated that the conference was designed to rally various Islamic organisations and stakeholders together to curb the menace of hooliganism, drug abuse, and other social vices in society. The chairman of the NASFAT counselling committee, Dr Koyumu Abiodun Oladiipo, charged participants to take the message from the conference to their various branches and zones. He assured that they are committed to assisting people who need support in overcoming challenges within the committee’s thematic area of work.

In his keynote address, the chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa, appealed to youths to shun drug abuse and cultivate good character. Represented by the Kwara State Commander of NDLEA, Fatimah Popoola, Gen. Marwa warned that drugs destroy morality and prevent young people from achieving their goals. He noted that the agency’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) programme cuts across all strata of society, from communities to schools and parents.

The Vice Chancellor of Fountain University, Professor Olayinka Ramota Karim, commended NASFAT and NDLEA for their interventions in drug abuse and social vices, which she said are a menace to people and society. The Vice Chancellor said that the university has put mechanisms in place to monitor students and prevent them from indulging in drug abuse and other related vices.

The conference was attended by various Islamic organisations and stakeholders who are committed to serving the Ummah. The participants were equipped with the necessary tools to guide the youth and encourage them to imbibe the spirit of good deeds. The NDLEA’s chairman emphasised that youths are the leaders of today and should shun drug abuse.

Gen. Marwa’s message to young people was clear: shun drug abuse and cultivate good character. He urged the Federal Government, through the NDLEA, to intensify sensitisation against drug abuse across the country. The agency’s WADA programme is a step in the right direction, as it targets all strata of society.

The collaboration between NASFAT, NDLEA, and Fountain University is a welcome development in the fight against drug abuse and social vices.
