The Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) has introduced a mentorship programme aimed at addressing the country's research capacity gap. The Research Leaders Mentorship (ReLM) Programme will pair 25 early-career researchers with 25 established Nigerian scientists for a six-month engagement. This initiative commenced with an orientation workshop on September 7, 2026. The programme seeks to provide early-career scientists with structured professional and research development.

The ReLM Programme targets Nigerian postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers within seven years of completing their terminal degree. Eligible mentees will be matched with established scientists based on their research interests, career objectives, and disciplinary alignment. This approach enables mentees to discuss their research progress, career development, and professional challenges with their mentors. The programme also includes interactive capacity-building sessions focused on practical aspects of research careers.

The NAS programme recognizes that research capacity extends beyond access to laboratories, funding, or academic qualifications. Young researchers need guidance on research direction, professional development, collaboration, and navigating the research ecosystem. By connecting emerging researchers with established scientists, the programme aims to reduce professional isolation and create stronger links between generations of Nigerian scientists.

The initiative provides a platform for experienced Nigerian scientists to transfer institutional knowledge, research experience, and professional networks to younger researchers. This is crucial as Nigeria seeks to strengthen its science, technology, and innovation ecosystem and increase the contribution of research to national development. The programme positions mentorship as a strategic tool for strengthening Nigeria's scientific community and improving research capacity.

The NAS said the ReLM Programme is designed to strengthen the next generation of scientific leaders and enable young researchers to contribute effectively to Nigeria's research and innovation ecosystem. The programme will provide mentees with opportunities to develop competitive research proposals, communicate scientific findings, and build professional networks. This approach reflects the Academy's recognition of the importance of mentorship in research development.

The Nigerian Academy of Science is Nigeria's foremost independent scientific body, mandated to bring scientific knowledge to bear on national policies and strategic direction. The Academy supports the development and advancement of science, technology, and innovation in the country. The ReLM Programme aligns with the Academy's goals, aiming to support the development of researchers capable of producing impactful research and building meaningful collaborations.

The NAS ReLM Programme has the potential to contribute significantly to Nigeria's research and innovation ecosystem. By providing early-career researchers with mentorship and support, the programme can help build a sustainable pipeline of scientists capable of producing high-quality and society-relevant research. The initiative also underscores the importance of collaboration and knowledge transfer between generations of Nigerian scientists.
