Mozambique's Inspector-General of the State, Carmelita Namashulua, has urged her institution's staff to take firm action to protect public finances. Speaking at the first Coordinating Council of the Inspectorate-General of the State (IGE) in Ponta de Ouro, Namashulua emphasized the need for strict measures to prevent the diversion of public funds. The IGE was established in January to enhance the capacities of the former Inspection-General of Finance and Inspection-General of Public Administration.

Namashulua stressed that the IGE must contribute to fiscal consolidation by ensuring that public resources reach essential sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure. She highlighted the importance of monitoring, supervision, and inspections in guaranteeing that public funds are used effectively. The Inspector-General expects the council to provide guidance for the next three years of the current five-year plan.

The IGE was created to improve the inspection and oversight of public finances and administration. Namashulua's call for firm action comes amid concerns about the mismanagement of public funds in Mozambique. The country's finance ministry has faced criticism for lack of transparency in managing public resources.

The Coordinating Council, which brings together senior officials from various government departments, aims to discuss strategies for enhancing the IGE's capacity to inspect and monitor public finances. The council will also review progress made so far and set targets for the future.

Namashulua's remarks reflect the government's efforts to strengthen accountability and transparency in public financial management. The IGE's work is crucial in ensuring that public resources are used efficiently and effectively to benefit Mozambican families.

The Inspector-General's office has faced challenges in the past, including limited resources and capacity constraints. However, Namashulua's leadership has brought renewed focus to the institution's mandate. The IGE's success will depend on its ability to work closely with other government agencies and stakeholders.

The outcome of the Coordinating Council will be crucial in shaping the IGE's strategy for the next three years. The council's recommendations are expected to enhance the institution's effectiveness in protecting public finances and promoting good governance.
