The Nakpayili E-Block, located in the Nanumba South District of Ghana's Northern Region, has finally been operationalised nearly a decade after its completion. This development brings relief to residents who have been advocating for improved access to secondary education. The E-Block Community Day Senior High School initiative aims to make secondary education more accessible by establishing schools closer to communities nationwide.
The Nakpayili E-Block was completed between 2017 and 2018 but remained unused for years, gradually deteriorating. However, this year, the school has been added to the list of senior high schools available for placement under the Computerised School Selection and Placement System. This development has enabled the school to admit its first batch of approximately 650 students.
The school's infrastructure is now ready to support academic activities, with completed classrooms, connected electricity and water supply. Mohammed Ibrahim, the school's first headmaster, confirmed that preparations for the commencement of teaching and learning are far advanced. The school has engaged the Northern Regional Education Directorate, which has selected teachers to be posted to the school based on the programmes to be offered.
The school will initially operate as a day school, in line with the original model for E-Block schools, with 16 teachers for the first year. As student numbers increase, the school plans to request additional teachers. The school is also furnished with furniture, and beds are available for students who will come from outside the community.
The opening of the school is expected to have a positive impact on the community, stimulating economic activity and providing opportunities for residents. The Assembly Member for the Nakpayili Electoral Area described the development as a dream come true, noting that the school will bring development and create opportunities for food vendors and other businesses.
Ongoing projects at the school include the construction of dormitory blocks for boys and girls, a multi-purpose dining hall, an administration block, and staff accommodation. The contractor, Chief Sofo Azoka, assured that these additional facilities will be completed within the next five months, further expanding the school's capacity and supporting its long-term operations.
The completion of the Nakpayili E-Block is a significant milestone in Ghana's efforts to improve access to secondary education. The school's operationalisation is expected to provide opportunities for students in the region, contributing to the country's educational development.
