Some Nairobi county councillors and aspirants from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) have called on the party leadership to provide direction on their political future. This comes after Governor Johnson Sakaja recently joined the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The councillors, led by nominated councillor Cecilia Wairimu, expressed concern about the uncertainty surrounding their candidacies in the 2027 general elections.
Wairimu, who is also a member of UDA's National Executive Committee (NEC), stated that the party leadership must address the confusion caused by Sakaja's move to ODM. She emphasized that UDA will still field candidates for various positions, including governor, woman representative, senator, member of parliament, and ward representative. Wairimu dismissed concerns that Sakaja's defection would disrupt UDA's plans to strengthen its presence in all 17 constituencies in Nairobi.
The councillors also urged the party to allow aspirants to campaign freely without interference. They warned against a proposed plan to divide Nairobi into zones for political appointments, which they believe would undermine the party's chances in the elections. Wairimu reiterated that UDA is committed to its principles and will not change its stance despite Sakaja's move to ODM.
Young leader Triza Miroya expressed confidence in UDA's strength in Nairobi, despite what she termed as online propaganda. She credited the current administration with creating job opportunities and improving the university education funding model, which has benefited young people. Miroya asserted that UDA remains strong at the grassroots level and is growing.
Nominated councillor Virginia Waitherero reaffirmed her support for President William Ruto's re-election bid and UDA's candidates in the 2027 elections. She emphasized the importance of ensuring the party's continued influence after the polls. Waitherero expressed optimism that UDA would emerge stronger and more united.
Political activist Chapia Chapia cautioned the party leadership against allowing the alliance between UDA and ODM to undermine the growth of other political parties. He urged the leadership to ensure that any agreements between the two parties do not compromise the interests of other parties.
The development comes as political parties begin to position themselves for the 2027 general elections. UDA and ODM are among the leading parties that have been vying for influence in Nairobi and other regions. The outcome of these internal dynamics will likely shape the political landscape in the country in the coming months.
