A dramatic video has gone viral in Kenya, showing a man jumping out of a moving matatu to chase a phone snatcher. The footage, captured by a motorcycle-mounted camera, shows the thief creeping up to the matatu, sliding open a window, and snatching a phone from a passenger's hand. The victim quickly hauled himself out of the narrow window and into traffic, determined to retrieve his device.

The video has sparked widespread interest and concern, with many Kenyans questioning what could have been on the phone to prompt such a risky move. The incident highlights the growing problem of snatching cases in Nairobi, where phones, watches, prescription glasses, and expensive jewelry are frequently targeted. Women have also reported a rise in wig-snatching incidents, often occurring in crowded areas or traffic.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI), phone theft and hacking rackets are a significant concern in Kenya. Recently, detectives from DCI Kisii Central and fraud investigators from Mogo Auto Ltd busted a phone theft and hacking racket operating under the guise of a phone repair business in Kisii town. Two suspects, Duncan Ontita Anyaga and Phares Nyagaka Luke, were arrested and charged with stealing and unlawfully unlocking financed mobile devices.

The DCI raided a phone repair shop at Market Plaza, seizing over 500 assorted mobile phones and motherboards. Among the recovered items were several Mogo-financed Tecno KM4 handsets that had been reported missing, stripped of their security locks and prepared for resale. The suspects are in custody, and detectives are finalizing investigations ahead of their arraignment.

The incident comes as Nairobi residents grapple with a surge in snatching cases. The police are working to dismantle fraud networks targeting financed mobile phones, collaborating with partners to disrupt the theft, unlawful unlocking, and resale of these devices. Citizens are urged to report suspicious activities anonymously through a toll-free line or WhatsApp.

The video of the phone snatcher chase has sparked a wider conversation about phone security and safety in public spaces. Many are calling for increased vigilance and caution when using phones in crowded areas. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for citizens to be aware of their surroundings and take necessary precautions to protect their property.

The DCI remains committed to fighting phone theft and hacking, working closely with partners to bring those behind such schemes to justice. The public is encouraged to report any information related to phone theft and hacking incidents, helping to create a safer environment for everyone.
