The National Board for Technical Education (NABTEB) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have partnered to promote accountability and transparency in Nigeria. The partnership was formalized through the inauguration of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) at the NABTEB head office in Benin, Edo State. This initiative aims to ensure that NABTEB's activities are carried out in line with the Procurement Act and financial regulations.
Speaking at the occasion, NABTEB's Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Mohammed Mohammed, emphasized the importance of accountability in the use of taxpayers' funds. He noted that the inauguration of ACTU was crucial in ensuring that the board's activities are transparent and accountable. Dr. Mohammed thanked the ICPC for accepting the five members chosen by NABTEB to be part of ACTU, describing them as people with proven character.
The Edo State chairman of ICPC, Adenekan Shogunle, represented by Deputy Director, System Study and Review, Odogwu Preye, highlighted the commission's role in Nigeria's fight against corruption. He stated that ICPC's operations include investigation, prosecution, corruption prevention, system study, and review, public enlightenment, and institutional strengthening. Shogunle added that the inauguration of ACTU members demonstrated NABTEB's commitment to the Federal Government's policy of zero tolerance for corruption.
The ICPC operates primarily as an enforcement and preventive institution, covering various sectors of Nigerian society, particularly public institutions. Its activities are both reactive and preventive, responding to reported cases and suspected offences while attempting to stop corruption before it occurs by improving institutional procedures and promoting ethical conduct.
Chairman of the newly inaugurated ACTU, Dr. Emmanuel Adetunji, pledged that the unit would serve as a strategic partner in promoting ethical standards, systemic integrity, and operational transparency. He thanked the Registrar/CEO, management, and ICPC for finding his team worthy and expressed commitment to proactive prevention, systemic fairness, and collaborative engagement across all departments.
The inauguration of ACTU members included Dr. Emmanuel Adetunji, Christopher Ango, Benedict Usiabulu, Sunday Ediroro, and Deborah Oduware, who were sworn in by the Assistant Director, Legal Services of NABTEB, Wale Falola. The event marked a significant milestone in the partnership between NABTEB and ICPC to promote accountability and transparency in the education sector.
The partnership between NABTEB and ICPC is expected to enhance transparency and accountability in the use of public funds and promote a culture of integrity in the education sector. The collaboration is also expected to serve as a model for other public institutions in Nigeria.
