Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has officially handed over 60 acres of land to Devki Steel Mills Ltd for iron ore mining in Rubanda District. This move is expected to transform the area by creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic activity. The handover ceremony took place in Mufumba Village, Butare-Katojo Town Council.

During the ceremony, Nabbanja directed the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development to fast-track compensation for people affected by the project. She ordered government officials to complete the outstanding compensation process within one week and immediate payment of the 30 percent disturbance allowance to the affected residents. This directive aims to ensure a smooth transition and minimize disruptions to the local community.

As of Friday, 99 out of 161 people affected by the project had been compensated. The remaining beneficiaries are expected to receive their payments after the completion of the outstanding processes. Nabbanja emphasized that the project aligns with President Yoweri Museveni's call for increased value addition to Uganda's mineral resources before they are exported.

Devki Steel Mills Executive Chairman, Dr. Narendra Raval, highlighted the anticipated benefits of the investment. Local leaders, including Stephen Kasiaba and Col. Emmy Katabazi, welcomed the project, recognizing its potential to contribute to the development of the local economy. The investment is expected to support Uganda's efforts to increase domestic mineral processing and value addition.
