A 29-year-old South African businessman, Thembalethu 'Vacca' Ngema, was shot dead at his home in Buffelsdraai, eVerulam, on Saturday. According to his brother, Njabulo Mkhwanazi, Ngema was a successful entrepreneur who owned 11 cars that were used for a metered taxi service. Mkhwanazi said that Ngema's girlfriend had gone missing after the incident and was only seen on Sunday. According to Mkhwanazi, the footage shows the girlfriend leaving the house and talking on her cellphone about an hour before Ngema was shot. This contradicts her claim that she was at the tavern at the time.
The family also found it suspicious that the power supply to the area was cut off during the incident. Mkhwanazi believes that the power outage was intentional and may have been done to facilitate the crime. The police have launched an investigation into the murder, carjacking, and housebreaking.
Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza, spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal police, confirmed that a case of murder, carjacking, and housebreaking has been opened. He said that the suspects took Ngema's girlfriend hostage and demanded money from her and Ngema. One of the suspects allegedly shot Ngema when he returned home.
A friend of Ngema, who wished to remain anonymous, described Ngema as a hardworking and successful entrepreneur who was always willing to help others. He said that Ngema had started his business with a single car and had grown it into a successful enterprise.
