Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has stated that the Kenya Kwanza administration has made notable strides in curbing kidnappings and abductions. According to Murkomen, cases of kidnappings and abductions have decreased substantially since 2022. He emphasized that any reported incidents are thoroughly investigated, and the government is committed to addressing these security challenges.

Murkomen highlighted the government's efforts to tackle security issues, citing the establishment of a dedicated Anti-Abduction Investigations Unit to handle cases of abductions and kidnappings. The CS also pointed out that the government has intensified the fight against illicit alcohol, drugs, and substance abuse, which poses a significant threat to public health and community safety.

The CS made these remarks while responding to questions before the National Assembly plenary. He stressed that public discourse on security challenges should be informed by facts and a balanced appreciation of the situation. Murkomen also acknowledged that while progress has been made, security challenges persist, and the government is committed to addressing them.

Murkomen emphasized that the Kenya Kwanza administration's policy was clear from the campaign period: to end cases of extrajudicial killings and ensure that citizens feel safe. He noted that the government has created an environment in which every Kenyan can participate in elections freely, safely, and without intimidation by dismantling criminal gangs.

The government has also beefed up security on the Kenya-Ethiopia border to safeguard Kenya's territorial integrity. Murkomen stated that the government is approaching the situation in Moyale diplomatically with the Government of Ethiopia to prevent any spillover of the conflict.

In addition to addressing security challenges, Murkomen highlighted the government's efforts to improve the welfare of inmates. He mentioned that the government is set to launch an initiative seeking to provide beds for male inmates, demonstrating a commitment to improving living conditions in correctional facilities.

Key to the government's efforts is a commitment to fact-based public discourse and a comprehensive approach to addressing security challenges. Three key points emerge from Murkomen's statement: the Kenya Kwanza administration has made significant progress in reducing abductions and kidnappings; the government has established a dedicated Anti-Abduction Investigations Unit; and security has been beefed up on the Kenya-Ethiopia border.
