In a surprising revelation, murder accused Darren Govender has been linked to fundraising efforts for the defence of an alleged serial rapist. Govender, out on R200,000 bail, faces a murder charge alongside his brother Ferrel Govender in connection with Shailen Singh's killing. The alleged serial rapist, a 32-year-old Glebelands Hostel resident, faces 33 charges, including 14 counts of rape and multiple robberies.
The alleged serial rapist's trial, initially set to start last week, has been postponed due to issues with legal representation. Attorney Julie Reddy, approached by Govender to represent the accused, appeared in the Durban High Court on Wednesday. Reddy stated she had been paid for her appearance but had no written confirmation of her fees for the trial's duration. The court was told that Govender had no family ties to the accused.
Judge Sanele Hlatshwayo questioned why the issue of payment had not been resolved before Reddy was approached. Reddy explained that Govender had told her he needed more time to arrange funding and could not guarantee the fees would be paid. The accused reportedly mentioned his brother, Sibonelo, might contribute to his legal fees, but his contact details were unknown.
The court had previously postponed the trial on the understanding that the accused and his family would secure private legal representation and pay for the lawyer. However, Senior State Advocate Thabani Buthelezi noted there was still no firm undertaking from anyone to pay Reddy's fees. The judge postponed the matter to Monday, ordering the parties to resolve the funding issue.
The accused indicated his desire for Reddy to continue representing him. Judge Hlatshwayo emphasized the need for a resolution, stating that the matter should not be dragged on further. The trial against the Govender brothers is scheduled to proceed in May 2027.
Govender's involvement in fundraising for the alleged serial rapist's defence has raised questions. Despite having no known family ties to the accused, Govender is seeking donations for his legal fees. The case has been further complicated by the accused's previous fallout with two Legal Aid lawyers.
The trial's postponement has caused further delays in the case against the alleged serial rapist, who is accused of preying on women at Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi between July 2022 and August 2024. The court will reconvene on Monday to address outstanding preliminary matters and determine the future of the trial.
