Kenyan darts sensation David Munyua has secured a second appearance at the PDC World Darts Championship. He achieved this by winning the North Africa Region qualifier at the Nairobi Gymkhana last weekend. Munyua defeated fellow Kenyan Evans Njuguna of Nakuru in the final of the three-day event. This victory books his place at the prestigious tournament. Munyua is now set to build on his historic debut in 2025.
During his debut in 2025, Munyua became the first Kenyan to compete at Alexandra Palace. He produced one of the tournament's biggest upsets by stunning Belgian number one and former World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker. Munyua came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2. He survived three match darts in the fourth set before leveling the contest at 2-2. Munyua then produced a sensational 135 checkout on the bull in the deciding set.
Munyua admitted that qualifying again had been far from easy. He attributed this to the growing competition in African darts. Munyua faced a big challenge with consistency, but the experience he gained from the Modus Super Series in 2025 has really helped him. He expressed his determination to do his best at the World Championship. Munyua also thanked his sponsor, Winmau, for their continued support.
The Kenya Darts Association has called for increased government investment in the sport. They argue that greater support would help nurture young talent, strengthen grassroots development, and create more opportunities for Kenyan players to compete internationally. KDA publicity officer Wycliffe Omariba stated that darts is gaining prominence, with Kenyan players increasingly making their mark on the international stage.
KDA deputy chairperson Simon Kinyanjui also called for greater government support. He noted that the Government of Kenya has supported them, although not enough. Kinyanjui added that if the government supports them fully, darts will develop rapidly. Nakuru County darts stakeholder Stanley Karanja urged county governments to allocate funding to the sport and support athletes at grassroots level.
Other Kenyan players have also achieved success in darts competitions. Joseph Wanjohi won the African Continental Darts Tour, while Agnes "The Lioness" Jerotich won the women's category. She defeated Uganda's Sarah "The Iron Lady" Makanga. In the amateur category, Pascal Wanjala secured a place in the Modus Super Series.
The tournament brought together players from the Northern region, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and Malawi. It gave competitors a platform to showcase their skills while pursuing qualification opportunities on the international darts circuit. Munyua and other Kenyan players are set to compete at the international level, with the hope of making their country proud.
