In a recent update, MTN Ghana has outlined its mobile money charges for 2026, providing clarity on the costs associated with using the service. The charges, which include withdrawal and transfer fees, are designed to help users better understand the costs involved in using MTN Mobile Money. According to the update, cash-out fees range from GH₵0.50 for amounts under GH₵50 to a flat GH₵20 for amounts GH₵2,000 and above.
To use MTN Mobile Money, users must have a registered MTN SIM card, an active MTN Mobile Money account linked to their number, and a phone with access to USSD codes. The service allows users to top up airtime, purchase insurance, pay bills, and send or receive cash through MoMo in partnership with Bank of Africa. MTN mobile money withdrawal charges vary, with customers paying GH₵0.50 for amounts between GH₵1 and GH₵49.99, 1% of the amount for GH₵50 to GH₵1,999.99, and a flat GH₵20 for amounts GH₵2,000 and above.
Agents also earn a commission on every cash-out transaction, with rates varying based on the amount withdrawn. For instance, agents earn GH₵0.20 for amounts between GH₵1 and GH₵49.99, 0.4% for amounts between GH₵50 and GH₵1,999.99, and a flat GH₵8 for amounts GH₵2,000 and above. These commissions incentivize agents to provide cash-out services to MTN Mobile Money users.
Sending fees depend on the method used, either via an agent or directly from a phone. Peer-to-peer transfers via mobile cost 0.75% up to GH₵1,000, capped at GH₵7.50. Transfers via MoMo agents cost GH₵2.50 for amounts up to GH₵50 and 5% for amounts above GH₵50. Bill payments via MTN MoMo, including DStv, school fees, and utility bills, carry no MTN fee.
The E-Levy on electronic transfers, previously 1.5%, was repealed in April 2025, eliminating a significant cost for users. Receiving money via MTN MoMo is always free. A proposed 0.75% MoMo-to-bank fee announced in May 2026 was suspended by the Bank of Ghana before it took effect, ensuring that MoMo-to-bank transfers remain free as of September 2026.
MTN Mobile Money has implemented transaction limits for customers and agents. Customer transaction limits vary based on the KYC account type, with daily limits ranging from GH₵3,000 to GH₵25,000. Agent transaction limits are categorized into tiers, with wallet limits and daily limits varying accordingly. These limits aim to enhance security and manage risk within the mobile money ecosystem.
MTN Mobile Money, also known as MoMo, is a secure electronic service that allows users to store funds, send and receive money, make payments, and perform other tasks using their mobile phones. The service keeps funds in an electronic account linked to the user's MTN mobile number, and recipients must have a registered MTN MoMo account to receive transfers.
