Member of Parliament and Chairperson of the West Nile Parliamentary Caucus, Hassan Kaps Fungaroo, has urged for stronger unity and cooperation among legislators in Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He emphasized that communities in the West Nile region share strong social, cultural, and economic ties with people across the borders. Fungaroo's call for cooperation aims to promote peace, development, and trade among the three countries.
Fungaroo highlighted that communities such as the Lugbara, Alur, and Kakwa are spread across Uganda, South Sudan, and the DRC, making cross-border relations crucial for the people of the three countries. He noted that these communities are connected socially, culturally, and economically, and therefore, cooperation among legislators is essential. The MP cited examples of communities that are found in multiple countries, including the Lugbara in Arua, Uganda, and in areas of the DRC, and the Alur communities living on both sides of the Uganda-DRC border and in South Sudan.
The legislator emphasized the importance of maintaining peaceful relations among communities separated by international borders. He stressed that lawmakers should work together to determine how they can move their people forward and advocate for development in Uganda, the DRC, and South Sudan. Fungaroo also highlighted the need for closer engagement among lawmakers to address shared challenges and create opportunities for joint advocacy on infrastructure, trade, and other development priorities.
Fungaroo further highlighted the importance of cross-border infrastructure to regional trade. He noted that traders moving goods between the three countries depend on roads and other infrastructure located within the jurisdiction of neighbouring countries. The legislator raised concern over the poor condition of the road linking Paquats, Nebbi, and Arua, which affects communities and traders across the region.
The poor condition of the road does not only affect Ugandans but also people from the DRC and South Sudan who rely on the route for trade and movement. The West Nile Parliamentary Caucus called for greater attention to such shared infrastructure challenges, saying improved cross-border cooperation would benefit communities across the region.
