The Mozambican communications regulator, INCM, hosted a workshop on October 6 in Maputo, focusing on emerging satellite technologies for digital transformation. The event, supported by the Commonwealth Communications Association and ViaSat, aims to enhance technical competencies and promote knowledge sharing among participants. The workshop precedes the first ordinary meeting of the Electronic Communications Committee of the Southern African Communications Regulators Association.
The workshop covers various topics, including Africa's strategic positioning in the global space economy, satellite constellations, and multi-network integration technologies. Participants also discuss global security services for mobile satellite communications, the development of the Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System, and the role of satellite communications in air traffic services and navigation in Eastern and Southern Africa.
The program also addresses spectrum preservation for future applications, including Direct-to-Device technology, and the use of mobile satellite services in emergency communications during disasters. According to INCM spokesperson Edmundo Alberto, the workshop is crucial for deepening knowledge on emerging satellite technologies and associated regulatory challenges.
The event brings together members of the Electronic Communications Committee of the Southern African Communications Regulators Association, as well as national stakeholders. The committee seeks to maximize the sector's contribution to regional economic growth and development by promoting research, industry development, and policy dialogue.
The workshop is part of the organization's activities for the 2026-2027 biennium. The meeting aims to strengthen regional cooperation and the capacity of Southern African regulators to respond to challenges arising from the rapid evolution of the sector.
The CRASA is composed of seven specialized committees, including the Electronic Communications Committee. The committee promotes investigation, industry development, and dialogue on policies and regulations.
The ordinary meeting of the Electronic Communications Committee will take place from October 7 to 9 in Maputo, focusing on technological and regulatory issues in electronic communications.
