According to Rawlinson Leandro da Costa, Maria's nephew and Cibele's cousin, neither woman was aware of the other's passing. The family had been keeping the news from each other to spare their feelings. "Neither of the two wanted to see the other die," he said. "They even commented on it, sometimes jokingly, other times seriously, and it happened. One never found out about the other's death. It really is an astonishing thing."
Cibele, who worked in real estate and digital marketing and had nearly 12,000 followers on Instagram, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer before her mother. Her cancer began in her adrenal gland, with her first symptoms reportedly appearing in December 2023. She had been sharing updates about her condition on social media, reflecting on the challenges she faced.
In March, Cibele shared a photograph of herself receiving treatment in hospital and wrote about the difficulties of her condition. "As long as your only problem is money, be grateful. Worse is facing something that not even all the money in the world can solve," she wrote. She later developed infections in December after undergoing surgery, prompting her family to be called to the hospital.
Cibele eventually recovered and was briefly discharged from the hospital before her condition worsened again. Her mother, Maria, had been battling pancreatic cancer and was admitted to hospital on September 17 after her condition deteriorated. The family had been hoping for a recovery, but unfortunately, it was not meant to be.
Following the deaths, family friend Jorge Vitorino paid tribute to Maria, describing her as a joyful and affectionate woman who had a generous heart and left lasting memories among those who knew her. The mother and daughter were later buried together at a municipal cemetery, bringing an end to their tragic and courageous battle against cancer.
