Morocco's National Railway Office (ONCF) has been authorized to establish a joint venture with South Korean manufacturer Hyundai Rotem to maintain the country's future Regional Express Rail (RER) trains. The official gazette confirmed the news on September 21. This move follows an agreement between ONCF and Hyundai Rotem to provide long-term maintenance for the new electric trains.
ONCF awarded Hyundai Rotem a contract in February 2025 to supply 110 RER trains, including 60 rapid trains and 50 metropolitan trains. The two companies subsequently signed a 20-year maintenance agreement in Rabat on June 18. The maintenance program, valued at KRW 748.2 billion ($487.3 million), covers maintenance, spare-parts management, and technical support for all 440 train cars.
The joint venture between ONCF and Hyundai Rotem will support the maintenance and repair of the 440 train cars over 20 years, including spare parts and technical support. This partnership builds on ONCF's strategy to develop local railway expertise and industrial capabilities. The joint venture also represents a further step in implementing the industrial and operational arrangements linked to Morocco's acquisition of the new RER fleet.
The Hyundai Rotem trains are part of ONCF's program to strengthen Morocco's railway network and expand passenger services. The 110 RER trains will contribute to the development of intercity and metropolitan services. Industrial commitments linked to the contracts aim to strengthen Morocco's railway ecosystem.
The new trains are expected to operate on routes connecting major cities centered around Casablanca as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The maintenance partnership represents a significant step in Morocco's railway expansion plans. ONCF's agreements included industrial compensation commitments aimed at developing railway-related activities in Morocco.
The joint venture is a significant development in Morocco's efforts to enhance its railway capabilities. The partnership will support the long-term maintenance of the RER trains, ensuring efficient and reliable services. The agreement also highlights Hyundai Rotem's commitment to supporting Morocco's railway expansion plans.
The authorization of the joint venture marks a major milestone in the development of Morocco's railway network. The partnership between ONCF and Hyundai Rotem will play a crucial role in supporting the maintenance and operation of the new RER trains.
