Morocco's interior ministry announced preliminary results of the country's legislative elections, which took place recently. The results show that the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) is leading with 97 seats, followed by the National Rally of Liberals (RNL) with 66 seats, and the Independence Party (Istiqlal) with 65 seats. These results are subject to change as they are still provisional.
The Justice and Development Party (PJD) secured fourth place with 54 seats, marking a significant increase from the 13 seats it obtained in the 2021 elections. The Popular Movement came in fifth with 29 seats, followed by the Socialist Forces Union with 26 seats, and the Progress and Socialism Party with 19 seats. Other parties, including the Constitutional Union Party, the Social Democratic Movement, and the Left Alliance, also secured seats.
The interior ministry announced the results after vote counting and tallying at local and regional constituencies. However, these results are still provisional and subject to validation by the relevant authorities. The official elections portal stated that the publication of preliminary results would begin on September 24. The ministry also reported a final voter turnout of 38.08%, with varying turnout rates throughout the day.
The preliminary results indicate a shift in the ranking of political forces compared to the 2021 elections. In the previous elections, the National Rally of Liberals led with 102 seats, followed by the Authenticity and Modernity Party with 87 seats, and the Independence Party with 81 seats. The PJD had secured only 13 seats in those elections. The current results show the PAM in the lead, followed by the RNL and the Independence Party.
The three parties that make up the current government majority – the PAM, RNL, and Independence Party – have secured a total of 228 seats according to the preliminary results. The parties have begun following up on the results and gathering data from electoral constituencies. Several party headquarters in Rabat hosted gatherings of leaders and supporters to monitor the announcement of the results.
Party leaders have been reacting to the preliminary results. The president of the National Rally of Liberals, Mohamed Chouki, commented on the data collected by his party during the vote counting process. The Authenticity and Modernity Party celebrated its lead in the results at its central headquarters in Rabat. Meanwhile, the secretary general of the Justice and Development Party, Abdelilah Benkirane, described the results as a comeback for his party after a significant decline in the 2021 elections.
The procedures for proclaiming and validating the results will continue in accordance with legal procedures. The formation of a new government will take place after the validation of the results and the appointment of its head. The official elections portal provides updates on the electoral process. The preliminary results provide an indication of the shifting landscape of Moroccan politics.
