The Morgan Bay Hotel, located on the Wild Coast of South Africa, is celebrating 80 years of operation with a significant expansion and upgrade. The hotel, which was founded by Ivan Warren-Smith in 1946, has been run by three generations of the Warren-Smith family. Richard Warren-Smith, the current owner, and his wife Jackie, are continuing the family tradition with a range of new developments. This year, the hotel will see the introduction of a new laundry and maintenance department, a public laundromat, a water bottling plant with a 70,000-litre tank, staff accommodation, and two presidential suites.
The hotel, which employs 65 people plus casuals, experiences a significant increase in staff during the festive season when the town swells to over 1,800 people. The Warren-Smiths have been continually upgrading and expanding the hotel since they joined in the 1990s. The business now includes accommodation, restaurants, a spa, retail, a caravan park, a wedding venue, and conference facilities. The hotel's core market is domestic and family-oriented, although international tours have helped keep the hotel going in recent years.
The hotel's expansion has been necessary to accommodate both staying guests and increasing numbers of day trippers and holiday homeowners. Richard Warren-Smith noted that the hotel's paying guests had to share their space with day trippers, which they felt was unfair. In response, they created a space for the expanding tourism market. Over the past 20 years, the hotel has built The Tides, which houses the Milkwood spa, the Deck restaurant, Sandhoppa beach boutique, and a wedding and conference centre.
The hotel has undergone several renovations in recent years. In 2018, the hotel underwent its first major renovations in years, which included the addition of eight rooms, an expanded dining room, a new bar, games room, decks, and a new pool. Between 2018 and 2023, 23 rooms were revamped, including plumbing, electricity, cabinetry, bathrooms, flooring, and décor. The lounge, dining room, and games room were also redecorated.
Richard Warren-Smith credits his wife Jackie with continually driving change and improvement at the hotel. He noted that she is fondly known by the staff as "Notshinsha" (change) due to her constant efforts to update and improve the hotel. Warren-Smith also emphasized the importance of guest feedback in informing their decisions and ensuring that the hotel remains true to its core values.
The Warren-Smiths are committed to maintaining the hotel's reputation and ensuring that it remains a popular destination for generations of families. Richard Warren-Smith grew up with the hotel as part of his everyday life and has a deep understanding of the business. He noted that taking over the hotel was always a possibility, and that his family's legacy is something that he is proud to continue.
The hotel's success can be attributed to the relationships it has built with generations of families. Warren-Smith noted that the hotel's slogan, "It's like coming home," aptly reflects their goal of providing a home-away-from-home experience for their guests. The hotel's commitment to continually improving and expanding its facilities and services has helped it to remain a beloved destination for families and tourists alike.
