Mombasa County Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir announced that free medical services will be offered across all county health facilities throughout October. This initiative is part of 'Mwezi wa Baba,' a month-long commemoration dedicated to the memory of Raila Amolo Odinga, the late Orange Democratic Movement founding party leader. The governor declared this in an official notice issued on Friday, October 3.

The free healthcare initiative is a practical expression of the values associated with Raila, including dignity, equality, and social justice. Nassir stated that the tribute was intended to be felt directly by ordinary residents. He emphasized that there can be no more fitting tribute to Raila than translating the values he championed into service that touches the lives of people directly.

A candlelight vigil was held at Treasury Square on Friday, October 2, to mark Raila's anniversary. Nassir led the county's vigil, where Raila Odinga Junior was among those present, alongside a delegation of senior county leaders. The event was attended by Senator Mwinyihaji Faki, Woman Representative Zamzam Mohamed, Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi, Mvita MP Mohamed Soud Machele, Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba, and Likoni MP Mishi Mboko.

Nassir described Mombasa as Raila's "political bedroom," noting that the relationship extended far beyond electoral numbers. He stated that Raila never came to Mombasa as a political visitor but as one of them. The governor credited Raila's movement with shaping his own understanding of public service and emphasized the bond between Raila and Mombasa that history will not erase.

The 'Mwezi wa Baba' commemoration is a month-long tribute to Raila Amolo Odinga, aimed at remembering the late leader and recommitting to the ideals he stood for. Nassir encouraged residents to take advantage of the free medical services offered across all county health facilities. The governor's initiative seeks to honor Raila's legacy by serving the people directly.

The free medical services will be offered until October 31, providing residents with access to healthcare facilities without any charges. This move is expected to benefit many residents, especially those who may not have been able to afford medical services otherwise. The county government aims to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for its residents.

The commemoration of Raila's anniversary is not limited to Mombasa County, as other cities, including Nairobi, also held candlelight ceremonies to mark the occasion. The Orange Democratic Movement had called on Kenyans to light candles in memory of Raila Odinga on October 2, demonstrating the impact and legacy of the late leader across the country.
