Dr. Abass Mimiko, the Zenith Labour Party candidate in the 2024 Ondo State governorship election, has expressed his support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election, citing his achievements during his first term. Mimiko, the younger brother of former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, made this statement while speaking with journalists in Ondo Town, Ondo State. He believes that Tinubu has done well in rescuing the economy from collapse, particularly with his decision to remove the fuel subsidy.

According to Mimiko, when Tinubu took over as President, Nigeria was on the brink of absolute economic collapse. The country was in serious debt, had lost credibility globally in terms of finances, and was struggling with insecurity. The previous administration had left an economy that was spending up to 98% of its earnings to service debts alone, with no budget for subsidy. Mimiko noted that Tinubu has made efforts to bring the country out of this pit and into a state of basic stability.

Mimiko, a chieftain of the Zenith Labour Party, stated that although he belongs to the opposition, his support for Tinubu is based on his belief that the President is determined to reposition the country. He described Tinubu as a realist and a pragmatist who has done well and deserves a second term. Mimiko, however, urged Tinubu to find ways of ensuring that funds allocated to state governments are properly spent for the benefit of Nigerians.

The former governor's brother emphasized the need for state governors to be held accountable for their spending. He noted that governors are building overhead bridges instead of spending on fundamental issues that affect the lives of their people. Mimiko advised Tinubu to look into ways of making sure that states grow food, adding that if hunger is addressed, many other issues will become easier to resolve.

Mimiko's support for Tinubu's re-election is based on his assessment of the President's efforts to address the country's challenges. He acknowledged that Tinubu had inherited a broken system and is working to fix it. Mimiko's comments come as the country continues to face various challenges, including economic instability and insecurity.

The Zenith Labour Party candidate also called on state governors to prioritize spending on essential services. He emphasized the need for governors to focus on addressing the fundamental issues affecting their people, rather than investing in projects that may not have a significant impact on their constituents.

President Tinubu has been working to implement various initiatives aimed at addressing the country's challenges. His administration has introduced programs such as the NELFUND initiative, which aims to expand access to university education. The President has also been working to promote economic growth and stability, despite facing various challenges.
