The governor noted that the hospital previously lacked a dedicated inpatient oncology block, making it challenging to provide chemotherapy continuously. The hospital's upgrade to a Level 6 National Teaching and Referral Hospital is part of a Sh1 billion project funded by the national government. The project involves constructing a new twin-tower complex, which will expand the hospital's capacity to offer specialized medical services, including delicate surgical procedures, cancer treatment, and kidney care. Once complete, the upgrade is expected to ease the burden on patients from Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Embu, Isiolo, Marsabit, and Laikipia counties who currently travel to Nairobi-based Level 6 hospitals for specialized treatment of critical and chronic illnesses.
The centenary celebrations also featured a free surgical camp targeting children with various surgical conditions. The camp, conducted in partnership with the Kenya Association of Paediatric Surgeons, aimed to provide specialized care to around 120 children with surgical needs over four days. Meru County Executive Committee Member for Health Services Denis Mugambi stated that the initiative would give children requiring surgical interventions an opportunity to access care without their families bearing the cost of treatment.
